In a display of unity and international friendship, the town of Swanley, UK, joined its two twin towns of Verrières-le-Buisson in France, Fastiv in Ukraine, and the German town of Hövelhof in a cross-border celebration to mark World Twinning Day.

This year’s event was particularly significant, commemorating forty years of twinning between Swanley and Verrières-le-Buisson, and two years of partnership with Fastiv.
Though separated by geography, the communities came together in spirit to reflect on decades of collaboration, cultural exchange, and mutual support.

To honour the occasion, Swanley lit a beacon, symbolising solidarity not just with its direct twin towns, but also with Hövelhof, Germany – which shares a twinning link with Verrières-le-Buisson.
The beacon lighting served as a powerful gesture of unity and commitment to maintaining strong ties across Europe, particularly in times of global uncertainty.
Councillors and community members gathered in Swanley to witness the beacon ceremony, sharing messages of goodwill with their European counterparts through virtual calls and digital messages.
Each town participated in coordinated events to mark the occasion, including cultural presentations and speeches highlighting the value of twinning relationships in promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation.

World Twinning Day serves as a global reminder of the importance of building bridges between communities and fostering friendships that transcend borders.
In this spirit, Swanley’s celebration stood as a testament to the enduring strength of international partnerships.

As Swanley reflects on its 40-year journey with Verrières-le-Buisson and its growing connection with Fastiv, the town also looks forward to deepening these ties and continuing to support one another as members of a shared European family.
