M26 Contingency Planning Scheme
We are letting local people know about a contingency scheme that will enable a traffic management system to be deployed on the M26 if port bound freight traffic needs to be managed due to disruption and delays at the port of Dover and Eurotunnel.
The scheme will require the installation of two moveable barriers in the central reservation to enable vehicles to cross over to the opposite carriageway if required.
We aim to undertake these essential works between 19 November 2018 and 21 December 2018.
In order to minimise the disruption to local residents and the travelling public, the majority of the works will be completed overnight between the hours of 10pm and 5am, Monday to Thursday (inclusive). On Friday nights, work will take place between 11pm and 6am.
Initial night closures (full road closures) will take place overnight between Monday 19th November 2018 and Friday 23 November 2018, however please note that these dates may be subject to change.
We will keep you informed of dates for further night closures.
Daytime narrow lanes will also be implemented around the two crossover work sites.
The daytime works will also require a reduced speed limit through the narrow lane sections for the safety of the travelling public and our workforce whilst travelling through the works.
The daytime works schedule builds resilience into the programme to guard against risks such as poor weather, which can impact on some elements of construction works.
The work may generate some noise during the installation of barriers. We will be continually monitoring noise levels to ensure minimal disturbance.
There will be a formal diversion route in place between the M25 J3 and M26 J2A, which will require motorists to drive to the M25 J3 and join the M20 until arriving at the M26 J2A via the A20.
Traffic driving in the opposite direction will follow the same diversion route in the opposite direction.
If you have any questions about this work please contact us via Highways England Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
I would like to thank you for your cooperation whilst this essential work is carried out.
