LEND A HAND

A new project to help residents get involved with volunteering and increase community participation has been launched by Sevenoaks District Council.

'Lend a Hand' is a new Kent-wide project, run in partnership with Kent volunteer centres, to help local people to volunteer in their community. The project provides residents with details of local volunteering opportunities and provides them with a single point of contact for enquiries.

Residents can find details of volunteering opportunities, how to make their mark and get involved at www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/lendahand. Alternatively they can call Sevenoaks District Council 01732 227000 or e-mail

lendahand@sevenoaks.gov.uk.

Lend a Hand is run in partnership with Swanley, Sevenoaks & Edenbridge Volunteer Centres, Kent Partnership and Kent Community Development Managers Group.

Christine Terry, Volunteer Development Manger, Volunteer Action Within Kent, adds: "Sevenoaks and Swanley Volunteer Centres are pleased to be working with Sevenoaks District Council to encourage residents to take an active part in their community. Through volunteering, people can influence how their neighbourhood develops, identify with their environment and be valued for their contribution."

SHAPE UP AND GET FUNKY

Swanley residents can get themselves into shape this summer by learning a whole host of new dance styles thanks to Strictly Dance Funk taking place in town.

The Strictly Dance Funk class runs for an hour every Wednesday morning at 10.30am at White Oak Leisure Centre, and offers participants a chance to try out a number of dance techniques including ceroc, disco, salsa dancing and many more.

The classes help encourage people to do regular exercise which can help with losing weight, as well as making people feel healthier and fitter by relieving stress and can improve mental wellbeing.

The sessions are for people aged 18 and over of any ability and cost £2, with free crèche facilities available for those with young children. Spaces for the crèche are limited and should be booked in advance by calling 01322 662188.

For more information on the class please contact Sevenoaks District Council on 01732 227000 or e-mail healthyliving@sevenoaks.gov.uk.

DISTRICT PLANNING POLICY SUBMITTED

Sevenoaks District's blueprint for the future development in the District, the Core Strategy, was submitted to the Government for independent examination last week.

The Core Strategy is part of the Local Development Framework and sets out the planning policies and how the District can be developed and protected up to 2026. The Strategy sets out what development can happen, where it can take place and what requirements it has too meet.

The document was submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government on the 3 June and the independent examination will consider whether the document is sound and consistent with national policy.

The submission documents and all other supporting documentation are available to view on the Council’s website at www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/csexamination. Alternatively hard copies can be viewed at Sevenoaks District Council offices and public libraries throughout the District.

The documents will be examined in public at the Council offices most likely during Autumn 2010.

For more information contact the Planning Policy team at Sevenoaks District Council on 01732 227000.

Headline: SAVE KASH THIS SUMMER

SAVE KASH THIS SUMMER

Residents, with help from Kent Action to Save Heat (KASH), can keep their houses cool this summer and warm in winter by making sure their homes are properly insulated, and now is the perfect time to do this.

The KASH scheme assists Kent residents by providing a service that can tackle all major energy saving measures. This ranges from grants and discounts for loft and cavity wall insulation, to advice and assistance with central heating improvements and renewable technologies such as solar panels.

After emerging from the worst winter in 20 years most people are looking forward to warmer temperatures, but some may not be aware that now is the best time to consider insulating homes if the house isn't already insulated.

Tackling home insulation now means that residents will not only be prepared for winter but they can also benefit from some cooling benefits that a properly insulated home will provide. Keeping your home cool in the summer will also help reduce electricity bills by reducing reliance on cooling devices such as fans and air conditioning units.

The project is being delivered by environmental agency CEN (Creative Environmental Networks). CEN’s energy experts are able to advise residents on a range of energy saving measures and can arrange for free surveys for loft and cavity wall insulation.

Louise Shrubsole, the Chair of the Kent Energy Efficiency Partnership, stated: "One of our main motivations is to help Kent residents save money through energy saving improvements in their homes. The KASH scheme is a simple service that provides free support to Kent residents and we would encourage as many people as possible to make use of it."

For more information or to arrange a free survey contact the KASH scheme on 0800 358 6669.

Swanley lies at the northernmost point of the area of Sevenoaks District Council and also within the administrative area of Kent County Council.

Swanley Town Council came into existence in 1974 and though unlike the County and District Council, it has few statutory duties (things that have to be done) it does have many powers (things that can be done). The Town Council seeks to exercise its powers for the benefit of the community of Swanley and Swanley Village.

There are four wards in the town, which are Christchurch, St Mary's and Whiteoak wards in Swanley as well a ward in

Swanley Village.

The Town Council provides a variety of recreation, social and other facilities for the benefit of residents and people who work in and visit the Parish area, working in partnership with other Councils and agencies to promote and deliver local services. The Town Council owns around 150 acres of parks and open spaces, including the principal parks of Swanley Park and St Mary's Recreation Ground.

Swanley Town Council's vision for the Parish of Swanley is:

"Working together to create a better community"

Working together with the people of Swanley, Swanley Village and other local providers to develop caring, quality services for the changing needs of the community at an affordable cost, Swanley Town Council is committed to ensuring the Swanley Parish remains a vibrant and attractive place in which to live and work.
